Ruthless (Ruth)

Origin and Application:
Ruth is one of the ancestors of Jesus's family line. Ruth and her husband originally lived in Moab, which is located in modern day Jordan. After her husband passed away, Ruth left her hometown Moab to follow her mother-in-law, Naomi, to Israel to seek a new way of life. Naomi urged Ruth to stay in her homeland Moab, but Ruth's determination to cling to her was unwavering, 「Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.」 (Ruth 1:16-18) Ruth's loyalty to her mother-in-law was unwavering, which made Ruth the model of loyalty.
While ruth is a synonym of compassion and faithfulness, ruthless is the opposite. We describe someone as ruthless when he or she has no consideration for others.
Ruthless 硬心腸 (路得記)

Meaning:
路得是耶穌家族的祖先之一。她和丈夫原居摩押，即在今天的約旦。她丈夫去世後，路得離開了家鄉摩押，跟隨岳母拿俄米到以色列謀求生計。拿俄米卻一直要求路得留在家鄉摩押。路得決意與岳母相依為命，她說：「你往哪裡去，我也往哪裡去。你在哪裡住宿，我也在哪裡住宿。你的國就是我的國，你的神就是我的神。你在哪裡死，我也在哪裡死，也葬在哪裡。除非死能使你我相離，不然，願耶和華重重地降罰與我。」（路得記1：16-18）。這種誓死的堅定使得路得成為世人心中忠貞的代表。
「ruth」一字有賢良孝順與忠貞的意思，「ruthless」則為反義詞。當我們說某人是「ruthless」，就表示他很硬心腸。
